PITTSBURGH, Pa. – On Tuesday night, the Geneva College team baseball dropped its resumed game against Chatham that was suspended on April 11 due to rain, falling 11-6. Geneva's record is now 9-25, 5-16 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
The two teams were playing a doubleheader on April 11, with Geneva winning the first game of the doubleheader that day 12-5. The Golden Tornadoes were leading game two, 1-0, in the bottom of the third when the rain that afternoon intensified, forcing the game to be suspended. By rule in the PAC, when that happens, the remainder of the game will occur at the visiting team's home field, so the game was shifted to Chatham to complete the contest.
The game picked up with Geneva leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third with two runners on base and no outs, and the Golden Tornadoes put up a big inning immediately. Freshman Zack Sackett (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) drove in one runner with an RBI-single. Senior Dillon Bickerton (Salem, Ohio/Salem) collected an RBI with a groundout. Sackett came around to score on a passed ball, and later in the inning sophomore Tim Hermansen (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) added a fourth run with a sacrifice fly, extending the Geneva lead to 5-0.
Unfortunately, the Golden Tornado pitching couldn't keep Chatham's offense under wraps. The Cougars got on the board with a run in the fourth, and then Chatham added three in the fifth to pull within 5-4. The Cougars then took the lead with a grand slam in the sixth to take the lead, and Chatham pulled away from there for a 11-6 win.
Sackett led the offense with a 3-for-5 effort, including two runs scored and one RBI. Senior Adrian Tapia (Homestead, Fla./Keys Gate Charter) and juniors Gabriel Morales (Homestead, Fla./South Dade) and Jarrett Orbin (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) each finished with two hits.
Geneva will be back in action on Friday when the Golden Tornadoes play a three-game series with Franciscan. Geneva will play a single game at Franciscan on Friday, and then the Golden Tornadoes will host the Barons for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
