BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – There haven't been very many good days to compete so far for the Geneva College track and field teams, with the spring consisting of many cold and rainy days, but the Golden Tornadoes finally got some sunshine to enjoy on a cool and windy day at Westminster on Saturday. In addition, four runners went to a Division I meet at Bucknell to compete.
The highlight of the day for the Golden Tornadoes occurred at the Bucknell meet where junior Kevin Arseneaux broke his own school record in the 1500-meter race. He placed 12th in the seeded group, out of 95 runners, with a time of 3:49.12, which would put him in a tie for fourth in all of NCAA Division III heading into today's competitions.
At the Westminster meet, sophomore Emily Garvin finished fourth in the javelin, throwing 35.23 meters. Senior Catherine O'Donnell also placed fourth for the women in the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 12:22.11. Garvin and O'Donnell had the top finishes for any individual event for Geneva.
In addition for the women, freshman Lauryn Guild placed ninth in the discus with a throw of 34.22 meters.
For the men, Geneva's 4x100m relay team finished third with a time of 43.57 seconds. Graduate student Jack Garvin, juniors Desmond Lewis and Gabe Trexler, and sophomore Seth Tyson ran on the team. The men also placed third in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:30.37. Lewis, senior Josh Haines, sophomore Alec McCready and freshman Evan Groce ran for Geneva in that relay event.
Junior Brian Cline was the top individual finisher for the men, placing fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.73 seconds. Tyson also placed eighth in the triple jump with a jump of 12.24 meters. Sophomore Tommy Corbin placed eighth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:20.90. Senior Joshua Bout placed 10th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:56, while sophomore Josh Lamey was right behind with a time of 15:59.70.
The teams will be back in action next Saturday with a meet at Baldwin Wallace, the last meet before the conference championships on April 25-26.
