BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It's been quite the start to the season for the Geneva College men's soccer team, who are still undefeated after wrapping up non-conference play over the weekend, and on Monday senior Dominic Sambuco was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. The men's overall record of 6-0-1 is the second-best start in program history.
The Geneva defense has continued to stand out this year, as is often the case under Head Coach Gary Dunda, in his 15th season. The men have posted five shutouts in their seven games, including their last three matches, and over the past week they defeated Heidelberg and Muskingum by scores to 3-0 and 2-0, respectively. In total the men have given up just three goals, while scoring 18.
Sambuco was a key member of that defensive backline that not only shut out both Heidelberg and Muskingum, but it didn't allow a single shot on goal in either game. The Golden Tornadoes outshot their opponents by a combined total of 43-12 in those two matches.
Sambuco not only helped on defense, though, he played an important role on offense whenever he pushed forward, and he was a part of both Geneva goals on Saturday against Muskingum. Geneva opened its game on Saturday with one of the fastest goals in program history. Shortly after the ball was kicked off, Sambuco made a run down the left side and sent a beautiful cross through the box to the back post where junior Wil Dunda was making a run, and Dunda hit a one-time volley into the net just 21 seconds into the match.
Sambuco then picked up a second assist midway through the second half, finding freshman Luke Main open at the top of the box. Main took a touch and then sent a ball into the near corner to effectively seal the win for Geneva.
After a successful non-conference schedule, the men will open PAC play this Wednesday with a road match at W&J, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
