GREENWOOD, Ind. – Senior Emily Nelson and sophomore Laura Goonewardene were named to the Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday. The honor recognizes some of the top student-athletes in Division III that excelled both on the court and in the classroom.
To be eligible for the academic all-district award, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and hold a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50. Student-athletes must also have played in at least 90 percent of their team's games or been a starter in at least 66 percent of their matches.
Nelson is a Mathematics with Secondary Education major who has maintained a perfect 4.0 throughout her college years. She wrapped up her standout volleyball career this past season, finishing second on the team with 180 kills, 213 digs and 34 aces. This is the second straight year Nelson was named a CSC Academic All-District selection.
Goonewardene is an Elementary and Special Education major who emerged as a key setter for the women's volleyball team this season. She took over primary setting duties for much of the year, leading the team with 518 assists to go along with 187 digs and 25 aces.
