MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Geneva College track and field men's and women's teams opened up their outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge, hosted by Coastal Carolina, after enjoying a week of training over Spring Break. There were over 40 schools at the meet, including multiple Division I schools, and several Golden Tornadoes delivered strong performances.
Junior Carmen Medvit highlighted the event by winning the 5000-meters with a time of 17:37.58. That time was just one second off her school record time from two years ago.
Sophomore Daphne Alexander won her flight of the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters, while sophomore Katelyn Mathews and freshman Olivia Seetoo each cleared 1.45 meters to finish seventh and ninth, respectively.
Junior Emily Garvin had strong debut in her first meet of the season after just recently completing a standout season for the women's basketball team. She finished eighth in the javelin with a throw of 33.29 meters. Also in the throws, junior Allison Standish narrowly breaking her own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 42.17 meters, placing her tenth.
Freshman Audrey McAlister placed eighth in the 10000-meters with a time of 41:29.77. Freshman Sara Vos had a good meet in the sprints, finishing the 100-meters in a time of 13.05 seconds and the 200-meters in a time of 27.38 seconds.
The women's 4x200m relay team of Vos, seniors Favour Oladapo and Rachel Blessing, and freshman Arionna White ran a time of 1:51.87, which marks as the top time in school history.
On the men's side, the 4x200m relay team also set a new school record, finishing in a time of 1:30.81. Seniors Amari Andrews and Desmond Lewis, along with junior Seth Tyson and freshman Abraham Konneh, ran on the relay.
Individually, senior Kevin Arseneaux was the top finisher for Geneva, placing fourth in the 1500-meters with a time of 3:57.24. Freshman Trevor Nasso placed eighth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:03.42.
Lewis had a good meet in the sprints. He ran the 100-meters in 11.21 seconds and the 200-meters in 22.57 meters. Tyson also ran a strong race in the 400-meters, finishing with a personal best time of 52.39 seconds.
Junior Eli Eisenberger was the top distance finisher for the Geneva men over the weekend, placing 13th in 5000-meters with a time of 15:42.09. Graduate student Jack Garvin cleared 1.80 meters in the high jump before sitting out the rest of the jumps while recovering from a minor injury. He also threw a distance of 44.37 meters in the javelin, just behind senior Timothy Ehko's toss of 44.38 meters.
The teams will return from break on Monday to begin classes on Tuesday, preparing for their next meet on Saturday at West Virginia University.
