GENEVA, Ohio – Seniors Hailey Carroll and Carmen Medvit brought home first-place finishes at a competitive meet at the Spire Midwest Collegiate Open on Saturday, highlighting several strong performances by the Geneva men's and women's track and field team. The meet had multiple Division I and Division II teams at the competition. In addition to Spire, a few Golden Tornadoes went to a meet at Muskingum instead, including most of Geneva's throwers. Senior Allison Standish highlighted the performances there.
Carroll broke another school record for the second straight week, winning the mile in a time of 5:00.42. Medvit finished first in the 3000-meter race, breaking the ten-minute mark with a time of 9:59.63.
In addition on the women's side, junior Daphne Alexander equaled her personal best jump in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters, placing her 11th overall.
On the men's side, senior Eli Eisenberger and freshman Titus Mathews were the top finishers for the Golden Tornadoes. Eisenberger finished fourth in the 5000-meters with a time of 15:19.88, just three seconds off the school record. Mathews nearly missed out on setting the school record in the 400-meters, finishing fourth overall with a time of 49.66 seconds.
In addition to Eisenberger in the 5000-meters, sophomore Matt Otto placed seventh with a time of 15:28.30, while senior Tommy Corbin placed 12th with a time of 15:45.34.
Sophomore Abe Konneh had another great day in the sprints, narrowly missing out on the 60-meter record, placing fifth overall with a time of 6.96 seconds. Konneh also placed sixth in the 200-meters with a time of 22.15 seconds. Freshman Tyler Boyle placed 11th in the 400-meters with a time of 51.40 seconds.
Sophomore Ethan Haring placed seventh in the mile with a time of 4:27.70. Senior Karter Reath placed 11th in the 3000-meters with a time of 9:05.25, while Nathan Bailey finished 11th in the pole vault, clearing 3.75 meters.
At Muskingum, Standish placed fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 14.34 meters, while sophomore Kyla Parks placed eighth with a throw of 13.27 meters. Parks also added a ninth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 10.28 meters.
The track and field teams will head to Youngstown State next weekend to participate in the YSU Mid-Major Invitational.
