GENEVA, Ohio – The Geneva College women's track and field team broke five school records at the SPIRE College Indoor Games on Saturday, one of the best performances at a meet in recent history.
Senior Hailey Carroll was the biggest star for the women, breaking two different records. She opened her day by winning the mile race in a school record time of 4:56.48, besting her own time set earlier this year. A little while later, she broke her own school record in the 800-meter race, winning with a time of 2:18.38.
Senior Carmen Medvit also had a standout day. She began the first race of the day on the track by winning the 5000-meter race with a school record time of 17:45.38, a minute faster than any other competitor in the race. Medvit also added a third-place finish in the mile with a time of 5:13.73, an impressive performance that came not long after her record time in the 5000-meters.
Junior Daphne Alexander broke the school record in the high jump, besting a record that has been in place since 1996 by clearing 1.60 meters, which placed her in a tie for third in the event.
The women's final record was achieved by senior thrower Allison Standish, who broke her own school record in the weight throw with an effort of 14.68 meters, third at the meet. Standish also added a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.19 meters.
In addition to the record setters, the women had several other top ten finishes. Sophomore Audrey McAlister added a third-place finish in the 5000-meter race with a time of 18:52.51, while junior Lydia Nagel (19:49.21) and sophomore Sienna Jackson (19:50.00) finished ninth and tenth, respectively.
Sophomore Sara Vos placed ninth in the 60-meter sprint with a time of 8.13 seconds, while junior Kaelyn Hartman also finished ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.65 meters.
The women will now turn their attention toward the Indoor Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships in ten days. Some student-athletes will compete at the WGH PAC Tuneup event hosted at Warren G. Harding high school on Saturday, while some will rest up in preparation for the PAC Championships on Thursday, February 26, hosted at Youngstown State.
