ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. – On a cold and windy day, the Geneva College women's golf team hosted Waynesburg for its first and only home match of the fall season. The Golden Tornadoes were led by an historic program performance by freshman Sabienea Winston (Antigua/Antigua State) with a score of 78. The team's overall score of 361 broke the school record in the young program's three-year history.
Waynesburg was only able to bring three golfers to the match, so there was an agreement before the match started that the Yellow Jackets would double their best score to even out the match. Geneva won the match 361 to 466.
Sophomore Hannah Therrell (Barrigada, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) finished the day with a 93, which tied her with sophomore Anna Kaminski (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg). Freshman Taylor Bycroft (East Palestine, Ohio/East Palestine) shot a 97, while sophomore Karly Devaney (Akron, Ohio/Springfield) rounded out Geneva's top five with a 98.
In addition, freshman Karlee Bittner (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) competed as an individual today finishing with a 104.
"Conditions made for a challenging day on the golf course, but we played better today," said Head Coach Andrew Fee. "Playing at home gives us an advantage, but we still need to score better overall. Everyone made adjustments today and played better on most of the holes. There were still a few holes that we need to eliminate on the scorecards. We still have a lot of work to do before October 13, but I'm happier with the performance. Congratulations to Sabienea on a great round today."
The women get some time off before heading to the historic Arnold Palmer's Latrobe County Club on Tuesday for the St. Vincent Fall Invitational.
