MCKEESPORT, Pa. -- The Geneva College women's golf team battled the rain, as well as the golf course, in its match with Carlow on Wednesday afternoon at the Youghiogheny Country Club golf course. Despite the tough conditions, the Golden Tornadoes still put forth good scores, though the match was eventually stopped after nine holes because of the wet course. Geneva finished well ahead of Carlow when the match completed.
Freshman
Sabienea Winston (Antigua/Antigua State) led Geneva, shooting an impressive 42 over the nine holes. Sophomore
Hannah Therrell (Barrigada, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) carded a 46, while sophomores
Sarah Theus (Fleming Isle, Fla./Fleming Isle) and
Karly Devaney (Akron, Ohio/Springfield) each shot a 47.
In addition, freshman
Karlee Bittner (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) finished with a 53, while freshman
Taylor Bycroft (East Palestine, Ohio/East Palestine) carded a 55. That team pace, despite playing the first six holes in steady rain, would have been right on Geneva's school-record pace from Monday's match at Franciscan. Sophomore
Anna Kaminski (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) had responsibilities with her clinical work on Wednesday, so she did not travel with the team to the match.
"This is a very difficult course to begin with, so when you add in the rain, I was pleased with our performance," said Head Coach
Andrew Fee. "The sort of effort we put forth today shows the maturity this team is gaining, as last year we would have been more likely to use the rain as an excuse to not play well. Today, though, we battled the elements, along with a challenging course, and still put together a strong performance. That will hopefully bode well for future matches."
The women will be back in action on Saturday when Geneva travels to Grove City to play in the Grove City Invitational.
