Box Score GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City used big plays in the passing game to break open a close game and defeat Geneva, 55-17, on Saturday afternoon. Geneva dropped to 0-2, while Grove City improved to 2-0.
The game was tight for the first 25 minutes. Geneva received the opening kickoff and marched 67 yards in 12 plays, capped off by a 17-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Brutus Ogilvie (Salem, Ohio/United) to senior Jared Ozias (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville), giving the Golden Tornadoes the early lead.
Grove City answered right back when the Wolverines found Scott Fraser behind the Geneva defense for a 77-yard touchdown pass.
Geneva put together another strong drive on its next possession, again using the passing game effectively, and the Golden Tornadoes picked up more points on a 44-yard field goal from freshman Ryan Reitler (Connellsville, Pa./Greensburg Catholic Central). Grove City mirrored Geneva again when the Wolverines converted a 41-yard field goal to even the score back up at 10-10 early in the second quarter.
Geneva's offense drove inside Grove City territory on the following possession, but a sack of Ogilvie forced a Geneva punt, and three players later, Fraser got behind the Geneva defense again for a 57-yard touchdown pass to give the Wolverines their first lead of the day. A Geneva special teams mistake allowed Grove City to push the lead to 20-10 at the break when the Wolverines hit a field goal at the halftime buzzer.
Things got out of hand in the second half. Geneva committed the first turnover of the game midway through the third quarter, and Grove City quickly took advantage with another long touchdown pass to push its lead to 27-10. A blocked Geneva punt on the next possession gave the Wolverines a short field, and Grove City punched it into the end-zone early in the fourth quarter to break the game open, 34-10.
Grove City added three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, while sophomore Gueldy Charles (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast) scored for Geneva to close out the scoring, 55-17.
Grove City finished the game with a 545-250 yardage advantage in total offense. The Wolverines split their offense well, with 270 yards through the air and 275 yards on the ground. Ogilvie finished with 113 yards passing, while freshman Logan Kent (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) led the team with 64 rushing yards. Junior Damian Lomeli (Tampa, Fla./Gaither) finished with a team-high nine tackles.
Geneva travels to Waynesburg next Saturday to take on the Yellow Jackets at 1:00 p.m. The game will be the first conference game of the year for the Golden Tornadoes. Today's game did not count in the conference standings.
