Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team dropped its season opener on Friday night at the SUNY Morrisville Tournament, falling in three close sets to Johnson & Wales 26-24, 25-21, 25-22.
Johnson & Wales opened the match with three straight points, and the Wildcats led most of the set. However, a late run by the Golden Tornadoes gave Geneva its first lead at 21-20 on an ace from senior Samantha Peachey, and another ace, this one from junior Zoe Pifer, got the women to set point, 24-23. Unfortunately, Geneva could finish off the comeback. The Wildcats scored the final three points to win 26-24.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to a big early lead, 10-2, in the second set. Geneva never gave up, though, pulling level at 17-17 after another ace from Pifer. However, again the Wildcats had the better of things late, pulling way for a 25-21 win.
Geneva jumped to an early 7-4 lead in the third set following an ace from junior Megan Veon. The lead didn't last long, though, as Johnson & Wales scored the next eight points. The Golden Tornadoes again put together a late run to get back into the set, pulling level multiple times late, the last at 22-22, but as was the case in the prior two sets, the Wildcats found a way late, scoring the final three points to win the match, 25-22.
Veon led the team with nine kills, while junior Kami Mummau finished with eight kills. Sophomore McKenzie Shatzer had a team-high 13 assists, while Mummau led the team with eight digs.
